Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information Verbolus stores about you, how it is used, and the choices available to you.

1. Information We Store

Verbolus does not require an account or ask for your name, email address, or other contact details to play. It does store the following, associated with an anonymous, randomly generated identifier saved in a cookie on your device:

  • The identifier itself, which is a persistent value that can be linked back to your activity on this site and is treated as personal data under GDPR and similar laws
  • Any display name or avatar you choose to set
  • Game plays, scores, statistics, and streaks
  • Your settings and preferences (such as theme and notification choices)
  • Groups you create or join, and your membership/standings within them

When you join a private group, other members can see your current Daily streak and the detailed game scorecards you choose to share. You control detailed scorecard sharing per game and can set an override for each group. Group membership and your sharing preferences are enforced on the server; no public profile is created. You can manage your sharing choices anytime from Stats Sharing settings.

You can review, export, or permanently delete this data at any time from the Settings page.

2. Cookies and Session Data

We use a first-party cookie to maintain your identifier across visits, remember your preferences, and associate your game history with your device. This cookie is essential to the operation of the site and cannot be disabled while still allowing you to play and save progress.

3. Analytics and Third-Party Tools

We use Google Analytics, and may use Microsoft Application Insights, to understand how visitors use the site and to diagnose problems. These services may collect data such as:

  • Browser and device type, and operating system
  • IP address
  • Pages visited, time spent, and navigation patterns
  • Errors encountered while using the site

These third-party analytics cookies are optional. You are asked to opt in or out when you first visit the site, and you can change that choice at any time from the Settings page. Declining analytics consent does not disable core gameplay or your saved game data.

4. Advertising and AdSense Site Review

On pages reserved for future advertising, Verbolus currently loads the account-level Google AdSense script so Google can verify and review the site. Verbolus does not currently request or display any ad units.

Loading that script causes your browser to connect to Google and may provide technical request data such as your IP address, browser or device information, and the page URL. Google may also use technologies such as cookies, web beacons, or other identifiers when its services are loaded.

If advertising is enabled in the future, pages that display ads may allow Google and its advertising partners to collect, share, and use information through technologies such as cookies, web beacons, IP addresses, and other identifiers. That information may be used to deliver and measure advertising, limit how often an ad is shown, prevent fraud and abuse, and personalize advertising where permitted and consented to. Third parties may place and read cookies in your browser, or use web beacons or IP addresses to collect information, as a result of ad serving on the site.

Verbolus does not intentionally send your name, email address, Verbolus user identifier, group membership, puzzle words, scores, or other saved game state to Google as ad-targeting data.

Before making applicable advertising requests for visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK, or Switzerland, Verbolus will use a Google-certified consent management platform. The consent experience will explain the available choices and how to review or withdraw them later. Advertising will remain disabled until that consent experience and the related controls are implemented.

Verbolus does not sell personal information. If a future advertising implementation constitutes “sharing” or targeted advertising under an applicable privacy law, Verbolus will provide the notices and opt-out controls required by that law before enabling it.

5. Your Rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), users in the European Union have the right to:

  • Know what data is collected and how it is used
  • Access, correct, export, or delete data associated with your identifier
  • Object to or restrict the processing of your data
  • Withdraw consent for optional cookies at any time

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), users residing in California have the right to:

  • Know what categories of personal information are collected, as described above
  • Know whether their data is sold or shared (we do not sell any user data)
  • Opt out of the sale of personal information (not applicable, since we do not sell data)
  • Request deletion of collected data via the Settings page or by contacting us

6. Data Retention

Data tied to your identifier (plays, stats, streaks, settings, and group membership) is retained until you delete it from the Settings page or ask us to delete it. Clearing the cookie in your browser does not delete the underlying stored data, since a new visit with no cookie is treated as a new, separate identifier.

7. Children's Privacy

Verbolus is a general-audience site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details below so we can delete it.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with a revised effective date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
